New CCC publication: Climate vs. Weather

From CCC – Despite the planet’s warming climate, recently it has been rather cold in southern Manitoba. People often assume that just because the weather is now frigid, or since we had a relatively cool summer, that global warming is definitely not a problem anymore. Climate Change Connection has created a new pamphlet Hot Topic: Climate vs. Weather to address this issue by clearly distinguishing the difference between weather and climate.

The difference is time.

Weather is a description of atmospheric conditions in the short-term (e.g. today, the past winter). Whereas, climate is a determination of atmospheric conditions and trends over a long period of time (e.g. decades). So even if it is slightly cooler in Manitoba for a little while, the planet as a whole continues to get warmer. There are numerous signs of climate change in Manitoba and around the world, such as accelerated melting of permafrost, glaciers and sea ice. This pamphlet also presents nine examples of significant climate change impacts, obtained from recent peer-reviewed journals. The publication is available online.
