Sustainable Ottawa Begins Harnessing Community Energy

Ottawa – Sustainable technology and “green” products are about to get a lot cheaper for National Capital Region residents. Sustainable Ottawa Community Energy Co-Operative is a brand new non-profit community based organization that is a direct response to a lack of concrete action on the environment.

Sustainable Ottawa was established as a buyer’s co-operative with a mission to make sustainable technologies, products and services more accessible and economically viable to people within the NCR. The Co-Op is focussed on community building to promote environmental, social and economic sustainability within the region.
“Everyone seems to be willing to do something for the environment, but it always seems to be the most expensive option.”, said Rock Radovan, current Co-Op President. “For example, higher efficiency products tend to be better quality, yet more expensive. By making these products and services less expensive and possibly on-par with their less efficient counterparts, our members can make the simple choice that reduces their environmental impact and promotes sustainability. We should strive to make Ottawa a model of sustainability for the country and a source of pride for all Canadians.”
“When we talk about sustainability, we need to keep in mind that local business is a key contributor,” adds Co-Op Treasurer Pam Cushing. “Variety within the community is essential, and a vibrant business area benefits everyone. We need to support our local merchants, contractors and farmers because they play an import role that has been overlooked in the past.”
Sustainable Ottawa is focussing on negotiating discounts with local retailers that support the Co-op’s vision. To date, the Co-Op is pleased to announce Universal Appliances, Joe Mamma Urban Cycles, the Table restaurant and Modern Drycleaners as the first businesses to provide special discounts to our members.
The Co-op is also working on a long term project that involves organizing a bulk purchase of solar domestic hot water heaters (SDHW). One of the goals of this project is to ensure all possible financial incentives and rebates can be aligned and available to members simply and easily.
With concepts like “Buy Local”, the 100-mile diet, and home retrofitting gaining momentum, Sustainable Ottawa has positioned itself as an excellent way for people to make small, simple changes that will make a positive contribution to City life.
