A group of seventh-graders has done what staff at city hall were unable to do earlier this week — come up with a plan to eliminate plastic shopping bags.
The students from Cecil Rhodes School have produced a three-minute video promoting the banning of plastic bags and are challenging community leaders and all Winnipeggers to find alternatives.
“If Leaf Rapids can do it and San Francisco can do it, Winnipeg can do it,” said Jayel Masangkay, part of the Grade 7 video club at the Weston-area school. “Stop using plastic bags.”
The eight students have produced the video It’s In The Bag using a comic touch, live action and animation to get their message across. The video features Mr. Polymer in a session with a psychiatrist, complaining that he’s feeling unwanted after having been a vital part of people’s lives for 30 years.
“The Adventures of Nick the Ecologist and his Robot O-Zone: The
Mystery of the Missing Trees,” an illustrated children’s book for
readers ages 7 to 11, is now available from author Kevin J. Villeneuve.
The book teaches children about ecologists, ecology and astronomy.

Vancouver, B.C. (March 10, 2008):
The UBC Dollar Project will be holding its biggest event of the year,
the first annual “Dollar Day” on Wednesday March 19, 2008.
Dollar
Day will be a day of charity, fun, and free stuff! A booth will be set
up on campus where everyone can donate $1 for a good cause. In return,
each donor will receive a sticker, which is redeemable for free
popcorn, one entry to our raffle draw, and other goodies. Additional
raffle tickets sell at $1 each. Prizes for the raffle draw include DVD
rental certificates, T-shirts, movie tickets, and more.
The purpose of Dollar Day is to raise awareness and donations for the charities supported by the UBC Dollar Project. We
hope the Dollar Day will be both a day of fun and community building
for UBC and a day of charitable fundraising. We aim to establish Dollar
Day as our annual event to increase the visibility of our club on
campus and thus the important message of global awareness and
responsibility that we are promoting.
