Sierra Club is 116 years old!
Sierra
Club was founded on May 28th, 1892 with 182 charter members, and John
Muir as first President elect. In its first conservation campaign, the
Club led efforts to defeat a proposed reduction in the boundaries of
Yosemite National Park.
Save BC’s Flathead Valley
Nestled into BC’s southeast corner is a wilderness area of global significance called the Flathead Valley.
Sometimes
compared with Africa’s Serengeti for its richness of species, the
Flathead’s rare convergence of wildlife and stunning vistas are under
threat from mountain-top removal coal mining and other industrial
development.
We can all encourage British
Columbia to permanently protect the Flathead Valley and safeguard it
from destructive coal mining in adjacent areas.

Tar Sands Grassroots Engagement
Sierra
Club Prairie has a great new way for you to spread the word about the
Tar Sands and Nuclear Power to your friends and family! Our House Party kits
are all you need to host a social event with an environmental justice
theme! Invite your friends over for a potluck or a wine and dessert
evening, watch a video about the issue of your choice, look at images
of Alberta’s tar sands region or nuclear power, and read letters
written by those directly affected by these developments.
Then, engage in a discussion about what YOU can do to make your voice heard!
Kits include “Common Q&A” on each topic as well as “Suggested Discussion Questions” to get you going, and much more!

You are invited to the Sierra Club Canada Grassroots Summit
Sierra
Club Canada is planning a very special event for September which will
provide the opportunity for many of us–volunteers and staff–to gather
as a family and talk. Sierra Club needs one-club dialogue, training
and planning so that we can strengthen our grassroots as much as
possible. The event’s objectives are to:
- Share successes and develop effective campaigns
- Benefit from mentoring opportunities
- Evaluate best practices, and plan strategically together
- Capitalize on regional and national opportunities such as our “Cool Cities” program
- Get some much-needed training
- Have some fun
Friday September 12 to Monday September 15, 2008
Location: The Haven Institute, Gabriola Island, BC
If
you are an active volunteer with Sierra Club Canada – or would like to
be – this event is for you! Join us, and learn what makes Sierra Club
the effective organization that it is, and how you can help. This offer
is open only to members in good standing, and there are limited spaces
available.
Are you planning a wedding?
Give
heartfelt meaning to your special day by making a donation on behalf of
your guests in lieu of traditional wedding favours. It’s easy, and it’s
green!
You can tell your guests of the gift
you have made in their honour with individual place cards or simply by
having the emcee inform everyone during the speeches. We would be
happy to provide some sample wording or some templates to assist you in
designing your favour.
While we do not
require a minimum donation, we do suggest that couples donate the
amount that they would have been spent on traditional favours.

Sierra Club Welcomes Two New Campaigners
Sierra
Club welcomes our new national water campaigner. Céleste Côté comes to
us with excellent campaigning skills, teambuilding skills and sheer
energy. Her campaigning background includes “Rock the Vote” and other
campaigns at the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa,
electoral reform and municipal election campaigns, and the
Outaouais-Ottawa Stop the SPP Coalition. We welcome our new team
member. She can be reached at celestec@sierraclub.ca
Jeh
Custer will be based in Edmonton and will have responsibility for tar
sands and pipeline campaigns in Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
Jeh has an Honours BA in Land Use and Environmental Studies from the
University of Saskatchewan, and a Certificate in Ecological Education
also from University of Saskatchewan. He has been working as Prairies
Coordinator for Sierra Youth Coalition.
Aviation and Global Warming
Following
Chris Lyle’s presentation to GreenDrinks in March, our Quebec Chapter
is preparing a strategy to reduce greenhouse gases caused by the
aviation industry. The strategy will target airline companies,
governments and the public. We are looking for volunteers to develop

Forget
