Six representatives of Climate Action Network Canada member organizations are in Salt Lake City May 20-21 taking part in the public’s first look at draft recommendations for a cap and trade system under the Western Climate Initiative (WCI). Representatives include the David Suzuki Foundation, Pembina Institute, AQLPA, Manitoba Wildlands and the Climate Action Network.
The Western Climate Initiative was formed in February 2007 by Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington to develop strategies to reduce regional greenhouse gases. Since then the states of Utah and Montana have joined, as well as the provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba and Quebec. Ontario and Saskatchewan are observers to the process. The WCI cap and trade system is likely to play a defining role in the emergence of a Canadian and North American system for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
