BC Green Games returns for second year with over $20,000 in prizes.
VANCOUVER, BC— Have you gone green yet? For the second consecutive year, Science World is challenging BC’s students to document their green actions and submit their digital entries online to the BC Green Games contest. BC Green Games was launched last year as the first province-wide environmental contest for K-12 schools and over $20,000 in prizes will be awarded.
“We’re thrilled to continue BC Green Games this year,” says Bryan Tisdall, the president and CEO of Science World. “It was inspiring to see last year’s entries and hear how they encouraged other schools to do similar projects in their own communities. These students completed some incredible projects and we were thrilled to recognize their efforts. B.C.’s students are proving they not only think green, they act green.”
Last year, more than 140 schools participated by engaging in action projects at their schools or in their communities and then documenting their efforts.
All submissions are judged by environmental education and science education experts using the following criteria: demonstration of environmental responsibility, creative problem solving and clear communication about the project. To view last year’s winning projects and find out more information, visit: http://www.bcgreengames.ca/ . Registration is now underway and entries can be submitted during February 2010.
Science World’s BC Green Games is managed with input from government, school district, university, science and environmental education community partners. Presenting sponsors are BC Hydro and Terasen Gas.
"Education and awareness are key to creating a conservation culture in B.C.," says Larina Lopez, the senior manager of Community Investment, Outreach and Education at BC Hydro. “BC Hydro is pleased to support BC Green Games and encourage youth to take leadership in sustainability and build a conservation ethic."
"For Terasen, supporting a culture of energy efficiency and conservation through learning opportunities like BC Green Games is a natural choice," said Sarah Smith, the manager of Marketing and Energy Efficiency at Terasen Gas. "BC Green Games challenge students educate them on how they can make a difference—at home and in their community."
