After watching CNN’s story about Google’s Green Mission, I am reminded about what Tom Friedman wrote in his book Hot, Flat, and Crowded, about the Energy Internet world. Friedman describes this world as "IT meets ET, when the information revolution meets the energy technology revolution" and where Smart Homes exists managing our power consumption without us even thinking about (read the full Scientific American Interview). In CNN’s story, I caught a glimpse of that reality through Google’s latest innovation, Google PowerMeter.
Watch the demo on YouTube:
Google PowerMeter aims to help home owners make informed choices about their energy consumptions by simply tracking and giving access to how much energy is being used (and even by each appliance).
Studies show that access to your household’s personal energy information is likely to save you 5–15% on your monthly bill. Even greater savings are possible if you use this information to see the value of retiring your old refrigerator, installing a new air conditioner or insulating your home. The potential impact of large numbers of people achieving similar efficiencies is even more exciting. – Source: Google.
As of this post, Toronto Hydro–Electric System Limited is the only Canadian utilities company listed on Google PowerMeter’s partner page. I cannot wait to see how this initiative unfolds.
On another note, with the overwhelming growth and success of Bullfrog Power, I wonder if there will be a partnership between these two companies in the near future?
