The governments of Canada and the United States work cooperatively towards restoring and maintaining the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the waters of the Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem as stated in the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA). The two countries develop domestic programs in support of the commitments made and they also undertake cooperative joint initiatives such as the Great Lakes Binational Toxics Strategy and reporting on the State of the Great Lakes Ecosystem. Other binational initiatives include the development of Lakewide Management Plans, and investigation of the atmospheric deposition of contaminants into the lakes.
