TEACHER GUIDE. Sustainable Happiness and Health Teacher’s Guide is a curriculum resource that links health education outcomes to happiness and sustainability. Available in versions for Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Yukon. STUDENTS IN NATURE. Elementary students are invited to celebrate David Suzuki’s 75th birthday by getting outside. Participating schools will be sent a lesson plan that encourages students to take a “walkabout” in their schoolyard to observe nature. On 30 March, students will have a chance to hear Dr. Suzuki speak. Limited to 100 schools.

WELL-ADVISED BOARD. Blue Avocado examines hiring a development director, meaningful budget work by the board, and nonprofit romance in the workplace.

GREEN PROSPERITY. Bruce Pearce, GCC board member, profiled Canadian “green pathways out of poverty” at Canada-EU-US trilateral round table on green jobs, 3-4 February in Washington, DC. Bruce profiled Green Communities member organizations Warm Up Winnipeg and St. John’s, Newfoundland, Choices for Youth.

EARTH TO BUSINESS. Now is the best time for businesses to start planning Earth Day events, says Green Calgary, which offers Waste @ Work interactive presentations.  Other ideas include Go Paperless on Earth Day; volunteer with Pitch-In Canada’s Operation Clean Sweep; Lug a mug campaign; and Commuter Challenges … Read Ashley Lubik’s advice on how to avoid eating GMOs.

STORMWATER. Recent research shows that the kind of densities required for walkable urbanism may translate into less of a pollutant load, on a per capita basis, than that from an equivalent population at lower, suburban densities, and therefore less of a total pollutant load for a given population.

PROFITABLE BIKES. A Calgary school organizes a bicycle exchange: those donating a bike receive a $10 voucher (per bike) that can be exchanged towards a different bike ($20).  Last year, 89 bicycles found new homes … The risk of injury for cyclists riding on Montreal bike paths is about 28% lower than for cyclists riding on comparable roads unprotected from traffic, says new study … About 200 cyclists showed up by – 42 degrees C for Saskatoon Ice Cycle, the “coldest bicycle parade on the planet.”

CLIMATE CAR. Polaris Institute’s new report highlights how Canada could become a production centre for electric vehicles and raises important questions about the role of electric vehicles in mitigating climate change.

GREEN DATING. US columnist connects with a “vegan ecologist/drummer”, a “33-year-old with a snake” and a “flamboyantly tattooed athletic PhD”, and is given the choice to smooch, sniff, punch repeatedly, or pray for other users of green dating site “made with 100% recycled electrons”.
