Locals Defeat Kamloops Incinerator – We Can Do the Same in Metro Vancouver

Zero Waste BC – The proposed hazardous waste incinerator in Kamloops was defeated last week by locals who voiced their concerns. Citizen action really can make a difference!

Here in our region Metro Vancouver’s proposal to build so-called "waste to energy incinerators" to burn our garbage is entering a critical phase.
April 9th is the date when the Metro Vancouver Board will vote on whether to send a waste plan based on incineration out to the public for consultation. We can still stop this plan now, we don’t need consultation to know this is a bad idea.

Here are 3 ways you can take action:

Send a message to Metro Board members who took a position against incinerators during the last civic election. They were responding to a survey by Zero Waste Vancouver. These politicians may need to be reminded how important this issue is to you. Visit www.zerowastebc.org/contact to find a handy list of their email addresses.
Send a message to every member of the Metro Vancouver board telling them why you oppose incineration. Send an email to waste.incinerators@writewild.net  for your message to be forwarded automatically on your behalf to every member of Metro Vancouver’s Board.
• Join other ZWBC community members and show up in person on Friday, April 9, 9 am, second floor boardroom, 4330 Kingwway (two blocks north of the Patterson skytrain station). Your quiet presence will send a message to politicians that your care about the decision they are about to make.

If you write to Metro board members here are a few points to consider:

  • Metro’s proposed facility would be the biggest source of climate changing pollution in the lower mainland
  • Waste incinerators are the largest single source of dioxin and other harmful toxins in Canada
  • Incinerators lock us into feeding them a steady supply of garbage, even though we know we need to reduce the amount of garbage being produced over all.
