Media release from Greenpeace Canada:
12 December 2008 (Toronto) – This holiday season, Greenpeace Canada released the second edition of its bestselling The Greenpeace Living Guide, a practical guide to environmental action.
“The Greenpeace Living Guide doesn’t tell you how to change brands,” said Greenpeace Canada Executive Director Bruce Cox. “It tells you how to change your life, your community and the world. It explores global environmental issues and proposes global solutions.”
Organized like an encyclopedia, the 200-page guide includes entries for a range of categories from food to flooring. The second edition also features brand new essays on environmental issues like the tar sands and biofuels. At the end, an ‘everyday activist’ section suggests strategies for readers to engage in collective action.
“It’s great for individuals to clean with baking soda or bike to work, but we can’t solely tackle issues like climate change as individuals,” said guide editor Amy Katz. “Collectively, on the other hand, we have a lot of power. We need to start using it.”
The Greenpeace Living Guide reflects Greenpeace’s commitment to political action–looking at how each one of us can be an everyday activist. While it includes plenty of tips on how to reduce impacts at work and around the house, the guide emphasizes systemic solutions.
“It’s important to change your leaders minds no less than changing your lightbulbs,” says Greenpeace Canada Campaigns Director Yossi Cadan. “Leaders need to write the rules, and the rules shape markets and change the behaviour of millions of people at once. Taking action is the best tool to ensure this living guide will be adopted by the rest of our society”
The Greenpeace Living Guide has been endorsed by prominent Canadians including Stephen Lewis, Sarah Polley, Ed Broadbent and Maude Barlow, who has called the guide a “must read for every Canadian.” The first edition is a Canadian bestseller, with over 8,000 copies sold to the public and distributed to Greenpeace members across Canada.
“The Greenpeace Living Guide is a valuable gift for anyone interested in environmental action,” says Cox. “For the holiday season, it’s a good solution for all the ‘enviros’ on your list.”
The guides, which are printed with vegetable-based inks on 100 per cent post-consumer recycled, processed chlorine-free paper, are available through Greenpeace Canada and can be purchased by phone at 1-800-320-7183 or online at www.greenpeace.ca.
