Province’s new conservation team will inspire Albertans to conserve water, energy and reduce waste
Edmonton (June 2, 2008)… Albertans are being challenged to commit to One Simple Act to make a big difference for the environment.
In celebration of Environment Week, Premier Ed Stelmach made a personal commitment to plant a tree on the Alberta Legislature grounds. Environment Minister Rob Renner committed continuing to replace the light bulbs in his home and constituency office with compact fluorescents.
“Collectively our actions make an enormous positive impact,” said Premier Stelmach. “An average tree absorbs 200 kg of carbon dioxide over 80 year. Imagine the results if just 10 people in every community in Alberta plants a tree.”
An Alberta Conservation Team will encourage Albertans to commit to “One Simple Act” – a simple action towards waste reduction, energy or water conservation. The team will work with community-based organizations, municipalities and corporations to support environmental stewardship activities throughout the year. Team members based in Lethbridge, Calgary, Edmonton and Grande Prairie will visit community events throughout the summer.
“This team represents our future environmental leaders,” said Renner. “They will be working with communities and municipalities to raise awareness of stewardship opportunities.”
Albertans can commit to their own Simple Act online at www.onesimpleact.alberta.ca. For more information on Alberta’s conservation and education activities, go to www.environment.alberta.ca.
