CALENDARS. Time for Action –
Tackling Energy Poverty in Canada Through Energy Efficiency will
bring together 250 delegates from across Canada this fall to examine
how best to improve the energy efficiency of Canada’s low-income
housing. Time for Action, sponsored by Green Communities
Canada, is happening 29 September-1 October 2008, Toronto. A
diverse assembly of delegates will share insights into barriers and
solutions that will benefit the environment and help reduce energy
costs for those who can least afford to pay. Delegates will also
develop a roadmap for a national low-income energy efficiency
partnership.
NO-IDLING
CONTEST. Clean Calgary is hosting a
design contest for a decal, part of an Idle Free campaign. Due 4 June.
SHIFTING
GEARS. Ambassador Erin McGauley has been
stopping people on the streets of Peterborough to encourage them to
participate in Green Up‘s 5th
annual month-long Workplace
Transportation Challenge, which runs from 5-30 May. Workplaces
with the highest number of participants win a Travel-Wise
Employer designation. Participants may also update their profile
online for fuel saved and commuter distance traveled.
REORGANIZATION.
Following the adoption of Equiterre‘s new Strategic
Plan 2008-2012 (in French), GCC Board member François Boulanger
is now Equiterre’s Energy, Transportation and Buildings Coordinator.
Isabelle St-Germain is Food, Agriculture and Commerce Coordinator;
Halima Elkatabi is Membership and Fundraising Coordinator and Steven
Guilbault will take on a more active role in strategic development
and will act as the organization’s spokeperson.
THE GOOD LIFE.
Green Communities supports The Good Life goals by
helping homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient with ECOenergy. World Wildlife Fund‘s The Good Life
challenges Canadians to reduce their C02 footprint.
CARBON TAX.
According to a recent poll, most Canadians support the idea of using
the tax system to punish or reward environmental behaviour. See
Toronto Star article.

BURN-OUT. CBC is looking for men who volunteer
their time to an activist cause for an upcoming radio documentary

technique designed to derive the maximum mileage from one’s
vehicle. Is hypermiling a sexier term than fuel efficiency or
conserving fuel? And a lot more dangerous?
ENERGY
SWEEPSTAKE. Ontario Power Authority is launching
a Every Kilowatt Counts
Summer Sweepstake. Contestants must reduce their electricity
consumption by 10% from 1 July to 31 August to be eligible for the
draw.
