Earth Hour Vancouver results

Posted on behalf of Melissa Tupper (WWF-Canada)

…a quick update on Earth Hour results here in BC.

We estimate that a minimum 4,000 people in BC signed-up to participate on earthhour.org and 52 municipalities in the province took part in Earth Hour.

Last night, British Columbians saved 125 MW of electricity, which
is the equivalent of turning off 2.5 million lights.  This resulted in
an overall reduction in the load of an average 2% throughout the
province during the entire Earth Hour.  In Vancouver, the average
reduction for the hour was 3.5%.  If everyone who participated in Earth
Hour last night did the same every Saturday night, the combined savings
would be enough to power 573 homes for an entire year.  If British
Columbians were to take the same energy conservation measures for one
hour every evening, the combined savings would be enough to power more
than 4,000 homes for an entire year.

Also check out some photos of the Vancouver city skyline, City
Hall and Science World with lights on and lights out.  This provides us
with a great starting point and hopefully motivates us to do even more
for next year’s Earth Hour!
