Vancity has a long history of taking action against climate change. They started reducing energy use and emissions from their
buildings and saved $2 million in energy costs. In doing so,
they have attracted new members and employees who share common
values and like admire Vancity’s conservation-minded approach.
In 2006, Vancity set a goal to be carbon neutral by 2010 but were able to reach their 2 years ahead of schedule. As of December 31, 2007, Vancity Credit Union is officially a
carbon-neutral organization. They did it with the help of experts at: The David Suzuki Foundation; The Pembina Institute; The Natural Step; Ecotrust Canada; The University of British Columbia; and Offsetters.ca (data was audited by Interpraxis.
