On March 29, you can join an estimated 21.5 million people around the world who will turn off all lights in their homes and businesses between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. to raise global awareness of climate change.
Earth Hour is a project started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia. In that first ever event, more than 1,900 businesses and government departments, and 60,000 households, participated. As a result, demand for electricity fell 10.2 per cent. Since most of Australia’s electricity is generated by coal-fired hydro plants, the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions was the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road for one hour.
World Wildlife Fund has become a major organizer of this year’s global event.
