I like alleys. I spend 30-40 minutes a day walking my dog in alleys, which are generally more interesting than streets, being more varied. There are gardens, fruit trees and compost piles, not to mention lots of junk and all manner of activities underway.
Communities around the world are finding that alleys can play a part in creating a more sustainable city. One interesting example is Jakarta, Indonesia, one of the world’s most polluted cities, where the “green grandma,” Harini Bambang Wahano, has helped a whole neighbourhood green its alleys. Find a video about her inspiring project by Googling “green grandma.”
