Students Take Action at EcoBuzz!

We’d
like to thank everyone who helped to make the Peel Environmental Youth
Alliance’s fifth annual EcoBuzz conference a success! On Friday,
October 26th, 2007, 300 Peel middle and high school students and
teachers were buzzing about the environment at the EcoBuzz Conference
hosted by Stephen Lewis Secondary School in Mississauga.

The conference kicked off with a lively keynote address by youth
inspirational speaker, Joel Hilchey. Students and teachers then
participated in a diverse array of interactive workshops in the areas
of: sustainable student leadership, local food, online social
networking tools, drumming, yoga, school yard naturalization, climate
change policy, nature appreciation through art, effective youth
engagement, and media literacy. Participants mingled with 30 local
environmental organizations to learn more about opportunities to get
involved in the environmental community.

Students got their green teams fired up by creating a school
environmental action plan and created their own webpage through PEYA’s
partnership with TakingITGlobal. Everyone wound down over a
student-made local dinner, followed by a contemplative political
performance by Toronto musician, Lila Rose.

Special thanks to the 50 student volunteers and supportive staff
from Stephen Lewis Secondary School, the hospitality program at West
Credit Secondary School, all local environmental organizations who came
out to display and donate prizes, and especially, all our fabulously
fun presenters! Watch for EcoBuzz 2008 next October!
