Importing Entries into Movable Type (3.4)

Well, after an almost 24 hr battle, I finally managed to figure out how to import entries stored in Microsoft Access into Movable Type….
(what a pain-staking, slumped-over-your-seat adventure that was….. but perseverance prevailed….)

  1. First, I had to export my entries from Access to an XML file.
  2. Second, I edited the file in Dreamweaver and proceeded to do some trial and error monkey-type find and replace routines to get the file looking like Movable Type’s import format.
  3. THEN (24 hours later after multiple attempts of trying to import the darn file), I figured out that MT needed to upload the file as U8-UNIX encoded .txt file rather than the U8-DOS encoded file that I was working with.
  4. 3 hours later (the next working day) my fellow co-worker Peter introduced me to UtraEdit which is an enhanced text editor on steroids. I downloaded the trial version, opened and then saved the file as U8-UNIX.
  5. I repeated each step 14 times (for each province, territory, and the Canada portal)
