It’s “smartliving” at St. Lawrence Market

TORONTO, Aug. 9 /CNW/ – smartliving St. Lawrence will help small
businesses in the St. Lawrence Market conserve energy, save on utility costs
and strengthen their bottom line this summer through the Clean Air
Foundation’s Cool Shops program. Cool Shops representatives will educate 61
St. Lawrence Market vendors on energy efficiency and provide them with tools
and incentives, making it easy to reduce energy consumption. The Cool Shops
team will be in the St. Lawrence market area August 8 – 11.

Smartliving St. Lawrence is a collaborative effort of the St. Lawrence
Neighbourhood Association and Eneract, a Toronto-based not-for-profit
organization that delivers sustainable solutions to environmental problems.
For the past year, smartliving St. Lawrence has been working towards
developing a conservation culture in the St. Lawrence neighbourhood to
establish a healthy environment by implementing a variety of initiatives,
including educational campaigns on smart commuting and workshops for tenants
and homeowners on how to lower energy bills.
“Toronto is experiencing record temperatures that are causing businesses
to crank up their air conditioners, putting a serious strain on power supply,”
said Cool Shops Program Manager, Cara Sweeny. “We are looking forward to
working with smartliving St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence Market
Neighbourhood BIA to help these businesses save energy and money through the
Cool Shops program, which is simple, easy and FREE!”
The Cool Shops street teams will easily reach their goal of visiting 750
stores in Toronto, by the conclusion of the program on August 18th, 2006.
Their goal is to install 1500 Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs and 1500
Light Emitting Diode (LED) exit light bulbs. The street teams offer free
energy audits to evaluate lighting, give on-the-spot estimated savings from
suggested retrofits, and provide a discounted product offer sheet to encourage
shop owners to implement energy conservation initiatives.
Cool Shops recommended products will be significantly discounted thanks
to Toronto Hydro with Home Depot Supply and NEDCO shipping the products within
24 hours, free of charge. The discounted product offer sheet will include:

In 2005, Toronto, Ottawa, Peterborough, Markham, London, and Milton
participated in the Cool Shops program. In total, over 7,000 stores were
visited resulting in over 3,200 energy audits, over 4,000 CFL installations,
and a reduction of over 806 megawatts (2,901GJ/yr). The changes put in place
translated into a savings of over $80,000 to small businesses per year and a
reduction of 240.8 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
Small businesses that participate in the program will also be included in
the Clean Air Foundation’s Cool Shops marketing program, receiving an official
Cool Shops window/door decal and recognition in local newspapers and
magazines.

  1. That sounds like a really proactive approach to visit businesses and recomend more environmentally friendly lighting choices. If you are looking for some reasonably priced($7 to $12) LED light bulbs that will fit regular lamp fixtures try http://www.shop.donsgreenstore.com , they are currently offering free shipping to Canada and the US. They are still dim bulbs but are a good choice for places you don’t need much light and want a low watt bulb that should last 50,000 hours.
