Judson Lake is situated on the Canada/US border in Abbotsford BC and Whatcom County USA. The Canadian side, which consists of twenty-six acres, is privately owned while the larger US portion is owned by the state of Washington. For decades hunters have enjoyed their sport on Judson and now the lakebed is filled with lethal lead shot. Judson Lake is also one of the trumpeter swan’s favorite roost sites. Tragically for four consecutive years now (and counting), the lake and surrounding area have been littered with their dead and dying carcasses. The unsuspecting swans are ingesting the lead shot, thinking it is gravel which they use to aid in digesting their food. The result is an inhumane, prolonged and painful death. It is a needless tragedy.
