Citizens' groups cry foul as NCC pushes approval of new road through Gatineau Park

Citizens groups are decrying the January 17 decision of a senior National Capital Commission Management Committee to approve a new million dollar access road in Gatineau Park. The proposed new road would cut a swath 1 km long and 20m wide through the forested part of the Mackenzie King Estate, with the objective of increasing automobile access from Ottawa-Gatineau to the Estate. Local citizens and environmental groups, CREDDO, CPAWS, and ACRE, are concerned that the NCC is sidestepping the environmental assessment process and failing in its responsibility to protect the park from incremental development.<br>
