An entire century's worth of Canadian garbage could be deposited in a landfill just 30 square kilometres in size. That's not bad given that most of our 10,000,000 square kilometres are sitting around unused. Yet Canadians are petrified that they will be swimming in the stuff if they don't sort their refuse into colour-coded recycling boxes. Torontonians are even willing to spend $22.5-million a year to truck their coffee grinds and used condoms down Highway 401 to Michigan, rather than keep open a local dump, or start a new one.
