OTTAWA, October 2, 2001 – Minister of the Environment, David Anderson, today issued the following statement welcoming the Report of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development: "This year's report of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development is notable for being Madame Gelinas' first report as Commissioner. It is also the first time a Commissioner has focused on a specific ecosystem such as the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence ecosystem, one which involves complex jurisdictional issues and diffused roles and responsibilities. Her recommendations are useful contributions to the Government of Canada's efforts to ensure a healthy and sustainable environment.
