Come out and learn more about Sawmill Creek, one of Ottawa’s many urban streams. What do aquatic insects and fish need for food and habitat, and what are the effects of urbanization on these requirements?
This presentation will focus on instream habitat features for these organisms, the effects of urbanization on watercourses and the importance of healthy streams in regards to larger river systems. Sawmill Creek was surveyed in 2003 and 2008 by City Stream Watch, and it will be used as an example during the discussion. Participants will also have a chance to try out sampling for aquatic insects in Sawmill Creek and identifying them in trays.
