The 2008 Green Reel Environmental Film Festival

VAUGHAN, ON – The City Playhouse will roll out the “Green” carpet on January 4 & 5, 2008 for The 2008 Green Reel Environmental Film Festival.  The festival features an environmentally-themed collection of award-winning international documentaries, mainstream Hollywood entertainment and independent productions. The schedule of over twenty films includes several free screenings which are sponsored, in part, courtesy of the David Suzuki Foundation, the National Film Board of Canada, Joe Public Films and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.  The list of films include “A Crude Awakening : The Oil Crash”, ‘The Edge of Eden: Living With Grizzlies”, “Black Gold” and “Who Killed The Electric Car?”, Michael Moore’s controversial “Sicko”, the Award Winning “Being Caribou” and the powerful Canadian documentary “Toxic Trespass”.

Battle in Seattle (2007)

Synopsis:

Based on one of the most incendiary political uprisings in a
generation, Battle in Seattle takes an in-depth look at the five days
that rocked the world in 1999 as tens of thousands of demonstrators
took to the streets in protest of the World Trade Organization. What
began as a peaceful protest intended to stop the WTO talks quickly
escalated into a full-scale riot and eventual State of Emergency that
squared off peaceful and unarmed protesters against the Seattle Police
Department and the National Guard.

Told through true events, Battle in Seattle seamlessly intertwines
compelling points of view from a cross-section of society – from
protesters and police to delegates and doctors – with no perspective
left untold from those who intentionally or accidentally find
themselves on the streets of Seattle on those last days of the
millennium. Dramatic theatrical performances merge with actual footage
of the event to bring these contrasting viewpoints to the screen.

Man on Land (2006)

In a remote spot in Northern Greenland, water and sky blend into one
great indistinguishable whole. Into this isolated place comes the base
drone of a ship’s engine. Scientists dressed in bright yellow Gore-tex,
like alien visitors from another planet, make land and begin a series
of information gathering exercises. The men measure eggs, gather
samples of birds’ feathers,  and sometimes simply sit and stare off
into space. Their presence, however fleeting and odd, is merely an
isolated incident and when they disappear over a distant horizon, it’s
as if they were never there at all.

Bing Ai (2007)

Bing Ai, her husband and two children harvest oranges on the banks of
the Yangtze River. Their misfortune is to be located in the flood basin
of the Three Gorges Dam Project. The government orders her to relocate,
and offers miserable compensation. Bing Ai refuses to move on such
terms, and thus begins a decade long struggle with local officials and
the land.
