Rex Turgano named as finalist in second-annual Canadian New Media Awards
Waterloo, May 9, 2001 – Rex Turgano, a recent University of Waterloo environmental studies graduate has been recognized as one of Canada’s new media leaders. Turgano is one of 5 finalists to be named in the “Volunteer of the Year” category of the 2001 Canadian New Media Awards.
“I am very proud and surprised to be a finalist,” says Rex Turgano, founder of thegreenpages.ca. “Having an environmental background and a hobby in computers made me realize that the Internet has the capability to enhance environmentalism and awareness in Canada.
60 finalists in 12 categories were selected from over 560 nominations received during February and March 2001. A selection committee comprised of 121 new media professionals from across the country collaborated online to select the finalists.
“The caliber of this year’s finalists proves that the Canadian new media industry is alive and well,” says Adam Froman, president of Delvinia Inc., producers of the Canadian New Media Awards. “This year’s finalists represent the industry’s best and brightest, and they rival the talent of other new media industries around the world.”
Winners will be announced at an award ceremony on May 28 at 7:30 PM in the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto, Ontario. A reception will be held afterwards in the Atrium of the Canadian Broadcasting Centre. Tickets to the reception can be purchased through Ticketmaster for $25 plus service charges ($15 for students).
thegreenpages.ca is one of Canada’s first eco-portals dedicated to environmental students and eco-minded people alike. Armed with limited funding, a low-end computer, and great determination, Turgano was able to learn on his own about html programming and web graphics design. Three years later – from thought to web – Turgano created an award-winning resource that pools environment related information together and hopefully alleviates the often time-consuming task of researching on the World Wide Web.
Detailed profiles of all the finalists are available at the Canadian New Media Awards Web site <http://www.cnma.ca>.
