Empowering Consumers with Alternative Food Choices while Helping the Environment

Canadians yearn for healthier
food choices but those choices are difficult to find. One alternative food choice
is Community Supported Agriculture where local farmers offer a better solution
to grocery store produce. The new Ontario CSA Farm Directory is a place for
consumers to find information about local farms and the CSA concept. Ontario
CSA farmers post their information on this directory, free of charge. Currently
with over 60 Ontario CSA farms listed, the directory continues to grow and evolve.

The purpose of the directory
is to help promote CSA farms and spread the word that buying local not only
offers better quality food, but empowers the consumer to help support their
community and the environment at the same time. With the prominence of issues
such as global climate changes, the use of pesticides, fertilizers and genetic
engineering is causing us to become more concerned with food safety.

A newspaper article that
focussed on a local CSA farmer triggered a series of events, which lead to the
creation of this directory. NetCompass Designs contacted the farmer and worked
directly with her in order to provide as much relevant information on the website
as needed to help educate the public and raise awareness to this healthier and
environmentally friendly food choice.

CSA farms offer fresh, high
quality vegetables (usually certified organic) with some farmers offering eggs,
poultry, meat, herbs and honey. The farmers receive a set fee from the consumer
prior to the start of the growing season. In return, the consumer receives shares
(produce) in the farm’s bounty. Each farm is different, but all offer fresher,
healthier alternatives to produce picked too early and shipped for hundreds,
even thousands of miles before making it to your plate.
