From Science North (Sudbury) – The loon, one of the oldest bird species in the world, has been returning to Ontario lakes since the end of the last ice age, nearly 10,000 years ago. We see them as more than just a bird; they are an indicator species. Their presence signifies the health of the land.
Greater Sudbury has a unique story to share, of a time when there were no loons to be found, and what led to their return.
Planting Hope: A Regreening Story explores and celebrates the largest and most successful reclamation project of its kind. Receiving international recognition, the project involved community groups, educational institutions, government support, private companies, individuals, and, more recently, Indigenous advisors, who came together to rehabilitate a damaged landscape. The film offers hope for a greener future by sharing Greater Sudbury’s story of environmental devastation and recovery, showing how the global mining industry can reduce its environmental impact.
Planting Hope demonstrates how, with commitment, collaboration and dedication, we can create a better future for communities and wildlife for generations to come.
Film presented in English, French, and Anishinaabemowin
