In this video, we get to tag along with Parks Canada scientists and Mi’kmaq Earth Keepers as they head out to Sable Island National Park Reserve to study a unique species: the Sable Island Sweat Bee. This little bee is super important for pollination on the island, and it’s the only place in the world where you’ll find it. It’s even listed as a threatened species under Canada’s Species at Risk Act.
The research team includes partners like the Sable Island Institute, Nova Scotia’s Museum of Natural History, the University of Manitoba, Brock University, and of course, the Mi’kmaq Earth Keepers. Together, they’re working to learn more about what makes this bee tick. And no, “sweat bee” doesn’t mean it sweats! The name actually comes from some species’ habit of sipping sweat off our skin.
Join in for a behind-the-scenes look at the fascinating work happening on this one-of-a-kind island!
