The Alberta Environmental Network is thrilled to announce the official launch of the Alberta Health Professionals for the Environment (AHPE)! This dynamic initiative aims to forge powerful partnerships within Alberta’s health sector, uniting those committed to tackling the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. By reducing the adverse effects of environmental threats, AHPE strives to safeguard both human and planetary health.
AHPE’s mission focuses on the critical intersections of climate change, biodiversity loss, and ecosystem degradation. The group is dedicated to:
- Building Consensus: Uniting health organizations across Alberta to collaboratively address environmental challenges.
- Public Education: Raising awareness about environmental risks and strategies for mitigation.
- Advocacy: Inspiring action from governments and the private sector to combat environmental issues.
- Structural Change: Promoting sustainable practices within health organizations.
- Social Justice: Protecting vulnerable populations from the impacts of environmental risks.
- Biodiversity Protection: Championing strong climate and environmental protections.
The AHPE Working Group is composed of a diverse and passionate collective of health professionals, academics, and subject matter experts. Led by Dr. Norm Campbell, the group draws from a broad spectrum of organizations, including nursing, pharmacy, medicine, public health, environmental education, health-related charities, and allied health professions.
Organizations represented in AHPE include the Alberta Association of Nurses, Alberta College of Family Physicians, Alberta Council for Environmental Education, Alberta Public Health Association, Canadian Association of Nurses for the Environment, Canadian Association of Pharmacy for the Environment, Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (Alberta Branch), Heart and Stroke Foundation (Alberta), and the Environmental Health Interest Group of the Calgary Medical Students Association.
Through collaboration across the health sector, AHPE aims to make a significant impact on the well-being of both people and the planet. This initiative represents another bold step in AEN’s long history of connecting environmental groups and passionate individuals, furthering the vision of a healthy, sustainable Alberta with an influential environmental community and environmentally engaged Albertans at its core.
