Fort Chipewyan – The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) has received some major star power to support their efforts in challenging destructive tar sands development in northern Alberta.

With his Honor the Treaties concert series starting this January, Neil Young, along with Diana Krall, will be performing live in Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina and Calgary. All proceeds from the concerts will help cover the ACFN’s legal costs.

The legendary Canadian rocker has already visited the territory and commented on the alarming environmental impacts of the massive project, one of the largest industrial project on Earth.

The ACFN and other communities live at the front lines, with much of their traditional territory containing tar sands deposits eyed by industry for exploitation.

First Nations and conservation groups have been arguing for years that tar sands extraction methods are causing large-scale destruction to the land, water and wildlife throughout the region, and that environmental protection laws are currently too weak to make a difference.
