As part of its efforts to raise awareness of the province’s electricity system, the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has released the Ontario Wind Map.
The interactive map demonstrates the variable nature of wind and the amount of wind energy available throughout the day. The map and data shows the last hour’s output of each wind facility connected to the transmission-level grid, plus the forecast hourly output for the next 48 hours.
Centralized forecasting of wind generation allows IESO operators to better anticipate changes in output and as a result, more effectively match supply to changing system demand.
The IESO will be rolling out the forecast to distribution-connected wind and solar facilities with an installed capacity over five megawatts (MW) later next year. In addition, the interactive map will also see further development such as incorporating additional layers of generation information.
