Toronto – In an effort to make the most of renewable energy opportunities, Evergreen Brick Works is hosting a workshop to demystify solar technology for Canadian home owners.
A Consumer’s Guide to Buying a Solar Energy System will help home owners take advantage of Ontario’s microFIT program, while reducing their carbon footprint and saving money as well. The workshop, to be held June 21 from 6:30-8:30pm, will focus on the best questions to ask when evaluating solar energy options. Click here to register online!
As part of a collaboration with Centrosolar Canada and Solsmart Energy Solutions, Evergreen Brick Works also features 22 new solar photovoltaic (PV) modules on the roof of Evergreen Garden Market, the sustainable garden market at the site.
The panels convert sunlight into 4KW of electricity, roughly 75 percent of the annual electricity consumed by a household of four. Meters on public display show visitors how these “roof tenants” are positively contributing to the household balance sheet as well as the environment. Indicators such as CO2 emissions and the amount of electricity produced each day help put real figures in dollars and environmental savings. “In addition to generating clean energy for our site we want to show people how accessible solar power can be,” says Robert Plitt, senior manager, Sustainability at Evergreen.
To that end, Evergreen Brick Works will also have a “solar house” from Kiosk Solar, on display throughout the summer, which will feature a working solar system in action — complete with panels, a light bulbs powered by the sun’s rays and a racking structure to attach the system to the wall. The demonstration house will show visitors just how easy it is to up their own solar system at home.
The solar modules join a vast array of green features at the site, including rainwater harvesting cisterns and state-of-the-art building technologies in the LEED Platinum (candidate) building.
