SolarBC — Local governments and First Nations are invited to submit an application to become a Solar Community under the SolarBC initiative, which has transformed the market for solar hot water systems in BC. A grant of $5,000 will be provided for six (6) communities selected through this application process. These six communities will join the following 9 Solar Communities:
- Dawson Creek
- Saanich
- Kelowna
- District of Tofino
- T’Sou-ke First Nation
- District of North Vancouver
- Vancouver
- West Moberly First Nation
- Resort Municipality of Whistler
With the supporting Provincial legislation (Bill 10, Bill 27), the voluntary Climate Action Charter, and expectation that the price of carbon emissions will rise in the future, BC communities are becoming increasingly concerned about their greenhouse gas emissions and aware that now is a good time to take action. The Solar Communities program is an excellent opportunity for local governments to show leadership in this area, with the added benefit of a grant to get things started. Becoming a Solar Community can help initiate a number of GHG reduction projects that will help your community meet its emissions targets while engaging local residents and businesses in meaningful ways. Additional information on SolarBC can be found at: (www.solarbc.ca)
Please take a look at the attached invitation (PDF document) and fill out the application form (Microsoft Word) to become a Solar Community. Note that the application deadline is March 31, 2010.
