Slow Food Vancouver – 2009 Summer Cycle Tours

Snail Biker - Slow Food Vancouver 2009 Summer Cycle Tours.jpgSlow Food Vancouver is offering two Slow Food Cycle Tours this Summer in the Fraser Valley. The leisurely, self-guided bike tours provide an educational and culinary experience at local farms, some of which are only open to the public on this special occasion.

Visit the Fraser Valley, home of the most fertile agricultural land in B.C. Wondering where the B.C. goat cheese, those lush heirloom tomatoes, flavourful hazelnuts — yes, from B.C. — come from? Meet the farmers to learn about local agriculture and why “local” tastes better and is better for you.

Agassiz Cycle Tour: Saturday August 22, 2009 (rain or shine!)

The 3rd Annual Agassiz Tour, compared to previous years, has added a cranberry farm, a second hazelnut farm, a different dairy operation and a choice of 2 lunches to pre-order through the on-line registration.

You have a choice lunch at either Limbert Mountain Farm or Canadian Hazelnut Co., a certified organic hazelnut orchard and processing facility (the company that supplied hazelnut flour to a 100 Mile Challenge participant). There will be a limited number of lunch tickets available on the day, so be sure to include the lunch option when you pre-register.

Chilliwack Cycle Tour: Sunday August 23, 2009 (rain or shine!)

At Chilliwack’s first annual cycle tour, take an edible garden tour and visit produce and hobby farms including a Black Angus farm and a goat farm that supplies Avalon Dairy (a sixth generation dairy farmer).

The Sto:Lo People of the River will be hosting lunch at the Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve with a traditional salmon BBQ, accompanied by a cultural presentation. Lunch must be pre-paid as part of pre-registration.

Net proceeds from the summer cycle tours of the Fraser Valley, along with donations from Slow Food Vancouver’s Adopt-a-Farmer campaign, will be used to sponsor two young farmers to attend Terra Madre 2010. Terra Madre is a project conceived by Slow Food with a philosophy that, “eating is an agricultural act and producing is a gastronomic act.” The organization, born in Torino, Italy, and annual event gives a voice and visibility to rural food producers around the world to promote and collaborate on sustainable, non-chemical based agricultural methods.

Cycling routes: approximately 25 km and relatively flat.

Prices:

  • $10.00 per Slow Food Cycle Tour or $15.00 for both Tours
  • Slow Food lunch is $10.00 per day
  • kids 12 and under can take part free of charge

Times: 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. each day (arrive and leave at your leisure)
