Delegates at the United Nations climate talks, held August 11-14 in Bonn, submitted CO2 reduction targets that fell short of cuts — between 25 and 40 percent — outlined by a U.N. panel of scientists.
Industrialized nations, excluding the U.S., have only planned to reduce greenhouse gas emissions between 15 and 20 percent below 1990-levels by 2020, according to U.N. officials. Canada appears to be at the low end of the spectrum and, according to a Reuters report, plan on “smaller reductions”.
Yvo de Boer, head of the U.N. Climate Change Secretariat, said earlier
2020 pledges were “miles away” to meet a goal set by the Group of Eight leaders at a July summit in Italy to cut emissions by
80 percent by 2050.
