Pathways to Health & Healing Conference
On behalf of Network Environments for Aboriginal Research BC and The Centre for Aboriginal Health Research, we invite you to attend a two-day conference scheduled for September 24-25, 2009 at the University of Victoria’s First People’s House, Victoria, BC. There are a limited number of travel bursaries available. Registration is limited to 150 attendees. Food Forests Gardening for 1000 Years
Dates: August 3 – 4, 2009
This two day hands-on practical course will take you through the exciting sustainable food forest approach to abundant food production for this and future generations. Together we will learn how to design food forest gardens and gain an introduction to the plants that best fit the temperate Northern climate. The course will be held at Clear Sky Centre, located in the beautiful East Kootenay Rocky Mountains of Canada. Dedicated to supporting athletes at all levels through coaching excellence, General Motors’ Making Dreams Possible Program provides 100 $2,000 club coaching grants and 10 $10,000 high performance coach grants, to community sport clubs and high performance coaches nationwide on an annual basis.

Innovative Co-op Projects Funding Application Now Online
Applications are now being accepted for the Innovative Co-operative Projects component of the Co-operative Development Initiative (CDI) program. CDI, which provides support to new and emerging co-operatives, is jointly managed by the Canadian Co-operative Association and the Conseil canadien de la coopération et de la mutualité. The program was recently renewed until 2013.

Community Based Awareness (CBA) Public Awareness Grants
BCRPA’s public awareness grants for this initiative are up to $4,000 and are available to communities to support marketing campaigns promoting physical activity using the Marketing Action Plan (M.A.P.), tools and templates. M.A.P. is designed to provide the information you need to promote multiple community events, programs and initiatives and ensure your campaign messages reach your target audience. Grant funds are flexible and can be applied towards the production of marketing materials or towards hiring support staff to coordinate the campaign.

What’s New
Report on Economic Insurance in Canada Now Available
Over the last year, the CCPA has recommended that Employment Insurance benefits be boosted in order to adequately support Canadians affected by the economic downturn. This recommendation is bolstered by a new CCPA study that shows Employment Insurance benefits in Canada are well below the OECD average, something that should make Canadians question the strength of their social safety net. BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) and the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon are pleased to announce communities that were successful in obtaining a Walk BC grant. On December 2, 2009 the Minerva Foundation for BC Women will honour 3 women at their Women In Food fundraising luncheon. Two honorees will be given awards for community leadership and excellence in the area of food. And one honoree will receive an award for their role as a volunteer or philanthropist in the food community.
