IKEA Canada to Eliminate Plastic Bags – July 1, 2009

IKEA Canada announced Tuesday that it will no longer offer plastic bags to customers to tote their purchases.  Instead, customers can either bring their own bag or purchase the IKEA Blue Bag, made of recyclable polypropylene plastic and already in use as an in-store shopping bag.  The sizeable bag costs only $1.

Effective date:  July 1, 2009.

IKEA’s announcement is really no surprise.  Over 70 percent of respondents to an IKEA Canada survey “indicated that they would support an environmental alternative to help reduce plastic bag use”.  Moreover, the home-furnishings retailer strives to be environmentally and socially responsible, from its Pick a Tree, Plant a Tree program to its UTZ certified coffee found in all Canadian IKEA stores.  It’s also in keeping with Retail Council of Canada’s move towards reusable bags
