Vaughan, ON, March 16, 2009 – Vaughan Mills shopping centre and Bullfrog Power, a leading Canadian provider of 100 per cent green electricity, today announced Bullfrog Power for Earth Hour, a joint initiative to encourage city-wide support for Earth Hour 2009. Vaughan Mills has pledged to turn off lighting* for Earth Hour
(Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 8.30 p.m.) in support of action on climate change. And, in recognition that even during Earth Hour homes and businesses still consume some power (for things like refrigeration), Vaughan Mills will purchase enough clean, green power from Bullfrog to power the equivalent of every home in the City of Vaughan for Earth Hour. That means Bullfrog’s generators will inject 100 per cent green power sourced exclusively from EcoLogocertified
wind and low-impact water power onto the Ontario electricity grid to match the estimated power usage of all Vaughan residents** for a one-hour period.
“At Vaughan Mills, we are committed to reducing our ecological footprint and we know that our tenants and shoppers also support these responsible business practices,” said Jamie MacLean, Marketing Director, Vaughan Mills. “Choosing green power allows us to continue our commitment to sustainability and reinforce the powerful messaging behind Earth Hour.”
“We applaud Vaughan Mills for its efforts to reduce its environmental impact and for encouraging the community to join them in these efforts,” said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power. “With their extensive communications reach, businesses can play a valuable role in spreading the message about the importance of environmental action, including taking steps to conserve energy and the benefits of supporting clean, renewable power.”
Earth Hour is a global WWF climate change initiative. The campaign invites individuals, businesses, governments and communities to turn out their lights for one hour on one day of the year to show their support for action on climate change. The event began in Sydney in 2007, when 2 million people switched off their lights. In 2008, more than 50 million people around the globe participated. In 2009, Earth Hour aims to reach out to 1 billion people in 1,000 cities.
“Vaughan Mills is joining an ever-growing community of individuals and businesses worldwide who are taking the Earth Hour message to heart and using innovative ways to build awareness about the critical importance of conservation not only during that one special hour in March but all year round,” said Gerald Butts, CEO of WWFCanada.

Ivanhoe Cambridge, which owns Vaughan Mills, has undertaken a multi-faceted sustainability plan which includes a major commitment to supporting green power in partnership with Bullfrog Power. Year-round, Ivanhoe Cambridge purchases green power for 50% of the electricity requirements of the common areas of 14 shopping centres across Ontario including Vaughan Mills, as well as the company’s Canadian head office in Toronto.
*Vaughan Mills will turn off lighting in the common areas with the exception of cove lights required for safety and security.
