Take Burlington Mall’s ‘ecoHero Pledge’ to light up your ‘eco power’ and generate change

burlington-eco-hero Burlington ON – Earth friendly living can begin with turning off the power for an hour on March 28 at 8:30 pm to participate in 60 Earth Hour. A longer lasting and more substantial impact on the environment emerges through the ‘eco power’ exercised by each individual who pledges to change ‘one simple thing’ on a day-to-day basis.

This is the message behind Burlington Mall’s ambitious, newly launched ecoHero program. The program invites everyone wanting to help save the planet, but doubting their own actions will have any real impact, to take the Burlington Mall ecoHero Pledge. Doing this online at www.burlingtonmall.com, before March 27, will mean a chance for each ecoHero to win free electricity for a year*, a $500 Gift Card for themselves and $100 Gift Cards for up to five friends. No purchase is necessary.

Becoming a Burlington Mall ecoHero is easy. Go online at www.burlingtonmall.com and click on ecoHero/Pledge Today. From the earth friendly action items outlined on the site, choose just one you are willing to commit to on a day-to-day basis, in addition to taking part in Earth Hour March 28, which is already checked off for you. This can be as easy as pledging to use cold water for laundry, a clothesline for drying, eco bags for shopping, power bars to turn off electronics, refillable cups for beverages or carpooling. Or you might choose walking or riding to do errands, not letting your car idle or eliminating the use of disposable products like razors, paper towels and diapers. Alternatively, you can name your own ‘one simple thing’ you are willing to commit to through your pledge.

Looking for new ideas for reducing our carbon footprint? Burlington Mall has included nearly 100 practical ideas for this on the ecoHero site under the heading ‘One Simple Thing’.

“We can all be ecoHeros,” explains Kim LaRonde, Marketing Director, Burlington Mall.

“It is simply a matter of choosing to make small changes in our every day activities. Small changes that, when added together, make a big difference today and for generations to come.”

The final step in completing your ecoHero Pledge is to name up to five friends who would also make good ecoHeros. This not only adds an element of accountability to your pledge, but will be a means of persuading others to exercise their own ‘eco power’ through doing ‘one simple thing’.

An ecoHero display at Burlington Mall will be launched April 6 to kickoff more chances to win exciting earth friendly prizes. ‘Waterwise’, an event co-hosted by Canadian Tire, will run April 13-18 and feature a $2000 ‘waterwise’ prize package.

On April 19-31 the Burlington Mall will put the spotlight on energy efficiency. To encourage the disposal of older, energy hogging appliances, anyone willing to part with one of these will be rewarded with the chance to win one of four Energy Star appliance prize packages, donated by The Bay and Burlington Mall and valued at $2,500.

Through running a school contest, Burlington Mall wants to encourage students to use their ‘eco powers’. On Earth Day, April 22, the Burlington Mall management team will assist the winning students in cleaning up a designated area in Burlington.
