VINCE ON VIDEO! Veteran energy auditor Vince Hughes, now with Windfall in Toronto, is featured on this excellent Ontario government home energy audit video. Vince co-stars with homeowner Sheilah Doherty and Ontario energy minister George Smitherman.

SPRING SPRUCE-UP. Free energy saving renovation workshops offered by REEP-Waterloo: Basement renovations and air leakage, 17 March; and Appropriate ventilation and furnace upgrades, 24 March.

VIDEO CONTEST. Surrey, B.C., highschool students are invited to submit videos for the Green Ideas Network‘s Third Environmental Film Festival, 21-23 April.

BIG NEWS. In 2008, City Green Solutions, Victoria, increased its capacity and tripled its delivery of grants for homeowner services; delivered Affordable Warmth, a foundational social housing program; developed a province-wide retrofit strategy for social housing for BC Hydro; promoted energy efficiency in homes and small businesses for the District of Saanich; and co-delivered the LiveSmart BC Efficiency Assistance Program, providing free energy assessments and retrofits to social housing units.

SEEKING DIRECTORS. Clean Calgary Association seeks directors for its Board, particularly people who have knowledge in the areas of finance and/or marketing. Due 31 March … New Idle-Free Calgary Campaign is launched with the theme Go Green for St. Patrick’s Day.

HOME TOXICS. Environment Network’s Michele Rich wrote an article about lead paint called Get the lead out around the house.

SUNNYSIDE UP. More than 200 people came to a solar workshop organized by Durham Sustain Ability on 20 February … Peter Love, Ontario’s Chief Conservation Officer, and Bob Willard, author of The Sustainability Advantage, speak at the introduction of EcoBusiness program in Ajax and Pickering, 18 March.

FOOD WITS. EcoPerth Recipe Column promotes local, in-season food consumption by distributing recipes and storage information. Recipes found weekly in local paper, online, and on recipe cards at local markets and fairs.

‘ROUND THE WORLD. EcoDriver Driving Tips flyer is now featured on a Spanish B&B website to promote fuel-efficient driving to tourists.

CARROT AND STICK. A carrotmob is the opposite of a boycott. Neighbourhood businesses compete with one another to improve their energy-efficiency, and then a big mob of consumers shops there on a given day.

INDUSTRY GUIDE. Natural Resources Canada’s Energy Savings Toolbox is a free, step-by-step reference guide to help industry identify and capitalize on energy savings. Includes technical supplements and spreadsheet tools to calculate consumption rates and patterns, total energy use, and the potential cost-benefit relation of modifying consumption practices.
