We unveiled an Earth Hour count-down clock earlier today over on Robson & Howe. With only a few days to go before Earth Hour, I’ve certainly begun counting down the hours and minutes to what will be the biggest call to action on climate change the world has ever seen.
Mayor Gregor Robertson officially proclaimed March 28th, from 8:30pm – 9:30pm, Earth Hour in Vancouver at yesterday’s Council Meeting. “It’s absolutely crucial that we continue to build public awareness about climate change, and Earth Hour is a great way to get people engaged,” he said. As Michele eloquently put it when accepting the proclamation, “Earth Hour is a global show of solidarity for action on climate change” (that wasn’t in the speaking notes but I like it and plan to borrow it!) Earth Hour is indeed a united, global call for world leaders to negotiate a new deal when they meet at the Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December 2009. In this critical year for our climate, the world must send a message to governments that inaction on climate is no longer acceptable.
Join us at Granville & Robson, we’re on stage at 8:15pm, for the count-down to Earth Hour. The fun will continue after the lights go out with concerts featuring some of Canada’s best emerging artists.

WWF’s goal for Earth Hour 2009 was to have 1,000 cities participate – we already have over 2,800 cities signed up in 84 countries. Media interest is again reaching a fever pitch as we continue to break records and exceed expectations. Look for a special Earth Hour pull-out section in this weekend’s Vancouver Sun and CBC Newsworld broadcasting live from our Earth Hour event at JunoFest.
On the West Coast, we’ll be among the last in the world to mark Earth Hour as it circles the globe. Here’s something to keep in mind – this initiative began only two years ago with 1 city, grew to over 50 million people participating last year and this year, aims to reach 1 billion people. When I step back and think about that, it’s a pretty compelling story in a time when those seem few and far between. So, no matter how you choose to honor Earth Hour this Saturday, whether with family, friends or your neighbours, may the idea that millions of people around the world are joining you in this call for action on climate change leave you with a bit of renewed inspiration and energy.
