It’s been three months since Canada’s most recent election, which had supposedly spurned any hope for a federal carbon tax. But we are finally starting to hear the perspective – shared by many environmentalists all along – that the carbon tax idea was rejected based on nothing more than disinformation.
In his weekly ‘Clean Break‘ column in the Toronto Star, Tyler Hamilton writes the following:
“Ironically, a carbon tax is beginning to win supporters south of the border and is gaining favour from some unexpected corners as a better alternative to the kind of (watered down) carbon cap-and-trade system Harper supports.”
Quoting US Republicans who say they would “gladly trade a carbon tax for a reduction in payroll or income taxes,” Hamilton beatifully undercuts Stephen Harper’s scare tactics in October’s election campaign.
