Greenbeltfresh.ca is a user friendly website that makes finding your nearest Greenbelt farmers’ market effortless by simply entering your postal code.
“Greenbeltfresh.ca is about supporting your neighbour,” said Laura Alderson, Coordinator for the Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation at the site launch at the Nathan Phillips Square Farmers’ Market. “By logging on, finding your closest market and buying local produce from the farmer, you’re cutting out the middle man and giving directly to the farmer, the stewards of the land.”
“This website is such a great idea,” said Il Fornello Chef Robert Craig. “Our restaurants thrive on serving locally grown food. The bounty of Ontario’s Greenbelt is remarkable. To be able to cook with fresh ingredients produced right around the corner is something to be proud of.
Greenbeltfresh.ca makes it easy for restaurants like ours and the public to source locally.” Il Fornello restaurants pride themselves on their all-Ontario menu. Chef Robert Craig of the King Street location was on hand for the launch of the website serving up local brown bag lunches to Mayor David Miller and Toronto City Councillors.
“Farmers’ Markets help build communities and Toronto is no exception: For every $1 spent at a farmers’ market, $4 is spent in our communities,” said Mayor Miller. “Toronto is fortunate to be part of the Greenbelt, the largest in the world. Possibility grows in the Greenbelt – it’s the bread basket and salad bowl of southern Ontario, and can feed everyone in the GTA.”
Greenbeltfresh.ca also features a list of restaurants that serve locally grown food, maps to farmers’ markets and interviews with chefs who support the local food movement like Jamie Kennedy.
Ontario’s Greenbelt is 1.8 million acres of protected countryside that wraps around the Golden Horseshoe and encompasses the Niagara Escarpment, the Oak Ridges Moraine, Rouge Park, hundreds of rural towns and villages and some 7,000 farms – home to some of the most valuable agricultural land in Canada.
The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation began in June 2005 as an independent, charitable foundation with a mandate to promote and sustain our Greenbelt as a beneficial, valuable, and permanent feature, enhancing the quality of life for Ontario residents.
