Finally, a new 11,000 square-foot child-care centre SFU Community Trust plans to develop stands to be the first ‘Living Building’ in Metro Vancouver, meaning its operations could be largely self-sustaining and carbon-neutral.
Designed by Vancouver’s Hughes Condon Marler Architects, the project could prove the local feasibility of the concept, introduced just last year by the Cascadia Green Building Council.
There are no examples, but that doesn’t dissuade Dale Mikkelsen, manager planning and sustainability for SFU Community Trust, about the prospects for the project.
“The very worst we’re going to do here is LEED platinum,” he said, referring to the highest level of certification under LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) protocols.
