AUC (2-May-2008) – The Penokean Hills Farmers and NORDIK Institute, Algoma University College’s community-based research facility is pleased to announce the official launch of the Penokean Hills brand of local beef. The event will take place Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the Algoma Co-op AG Centre in Echo Bay from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Penokean Hills’ beef on a bun being served.
“We are anticipating that the launch will not only bring attention to the Penokean Hills brand, but also promotes the idea of buying local,” says Alicia Mills, research assistant with NORDIK. “With the food prices of the world expected to rise in near future, buying local beef, as well as other foods, makes sense economically as well as environmentally.”
A ribbon cutting and a few words from Ken MacLeod, Penokean Hills President, and a few other dignitaries will commence at noon. Local MP Tony Martin, will be on hand as well to serve up some beef. The launch is in conjunction with an event that the community of Echo Bay holds annually called Echo Bay’s for Sale.
“We are excited about the grand opening of our business,” says Ken MacLeod. “We have been working together with Algoma University and the NORDIK Institute for over three years on this, and we are now getting to see the fruits of all our hard work.”
“Farming is an important driver of the local economy,” says Dr. Gayle Broad, research director of NORDIK. “It contributes over $7 million in direct revenues in the Algoma region, and there is a growing recognition worldwide of the growing importance of maintaining family farms for the security of food.”
