In celebration of Earth Day 2008, Carbon Diet launches the Going Green Solution Library. Going Green is now easy.
Many Canadians are concerned about Climate Change and asking “What can I do”?. The answer is ?a lot?.
We contribute to climate change in every part of our lives, whether it’s from heating our homes, using electricity, or even flushing the toilet (it takes a lot of energy to purify and distribute the water as well as treat the waste water before it can be disposed of).
Approximately 80% of the greenhouse gasses causing climate change are from carbon dioxide. Adding up the amount of carbon dioxide we produce is referred to as a carbon footprint. Using a carbon calculator commonly found on the Internet, someone can start to gauge how much they are polluting. The next step is to reduce their carbon footprint,
but to date, it has not been very easy to understand how to do it.
Tips and solutions for going green are now becoming prevalent in the media, but without understanding what changes will have the most impact, people and businesses can easily get overwhelmed or distracted by the amount of information. “Climate change is a complex subject, and it has taken a significant amount of research to understand the
solutions for the problem.” states Scott Bennett, co-owner of Carbon Diet. The key to success for this solution library has been making it simple to use and easy to understand. This is a resource for everyday people and doesn’t get into technical explanations.
The Going Green Solution Library covers five areas including Transportation, Heating, Electricity, Food, and Goods & Services. The environmental impact of each solution is rated as well as the Health and Financial impact. “In some cases a solution can help the
environment, improve your health, and save you money” it’s a triple win!” states Bennett. For example, walking to the corner store instead of driving will give you some exercise, save you money on fuel, and help the environment. The list of solutions also identifies
which items are one-time changes or a change in habit, which typically takes conscious thought to make the transition.
