Sierra Club BC and our allies are calling on the federal government
to initiate a marine use planning process for the Pacific North Coast
by Oceans Day, June 1, 2008.
The area of BC’s
coast from Bute Inlet to the Alaskan border supports a spectacular
diversity of marine life. This abundance is being increasingly eroded
by the proliferation of unsustainable industries, over-harvesting,
pollution, and changing temperature and conditions as a result of
global warming.
Clearly, ocean management needs
to improve. An effective marine planning process would engage people
who work and live on the coast in building a vision for sustainable
economic development and marine conservation. But this will only happen
with some very tangible and timely actions by the federal government.
Will they do it? Find out what progress government is making at www.PNCIMAwatch.ca.
