2. Canadian Filmmaker Sue Kenney walks Newfoundland Camino Oct 14-18
Canadian Filmmaker Sue Kenney walks 103 km starting in Renews, along
portions of the East Coast Trail, to her film screening “LAS
PEREGRINAS” at St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival. People
are invited to join her.

3. Humber Natural History Society Workshop Tuesday October 23, 7:30
A Humber Natural History Society Workshop will be held on Tuesday
October 23, 2007 in the Environmental Science Laboratory AS285 at 7:30
PM at the Sir Wilfred Grenfell College. Topic: The Identification of
our Native Broad-leaved Trees and Shrubs in Autumn.
No previous knowledge or skills are required. Because there is
considerable preparation and collection required, we will need to know
how many plan to attend. Registration is free, but spaces are
limited. Please email me at hmann@swgc.mun.ca or phone at work

The workshop will focus on native species. If you wish, bring along a
leafy “this year’s” branch of woody plants you would like identified
and we will do our best.
4. “Gannet Winter Vacations: Where to Go and How to Get There” Natural
History Society talk Thursday Oct 18
Dave Fifield (CWS Seabird Issues Biologist and M.Sc. Candidate in the
Cognitive and Behavioural Ecology program at MUN) will give an
illustrated talk entitled, “Gannet Winter Vacations: Where to Go and
How to Get There” on Thursday, October 18, 2007 at 8:00 pm at the MUN
Botanical Garden (306 Mt. Scio Road). Dave, a long-time member of the
Society, has been involved in this fascinating and mind-boggling
research on gannets.
Everyone is welcome.
5. MUN Dialogue On Advancing Global Sustainability Nov 13-15
Dr. Diana Liverman, Director of the Environmental Change Institute
(ECI) at Oxford University, will be on campus from November 13-15,
2007, as the lecturer for the inaugural Memorial University Dialogue
on Advancing Global Sustainability.
A research level seminar by Dr. Liverman entitled “Climate Governance
Beyond The Nation State: Are Corporations, Carbon Brokers and Citizens
Really Reducing The Risks of Climate Change?” will be held on Tuesday,
November 13, at 2 p.m. in Room IIC-2001, Inco Innovation Centre.
A public lecture entitled “Communities and Climate Change: Sustainable
Responses to a Warming World” will be held on Wednesday, November 14,
at 7:30 p.m. in Room IIC-2001, Inco Innovation Centre. A reception in
honour of Dr. Liverman will be held in the lower atrium of the Inco
Innovation Centre following the public lecture. Free parking will be
available in Area 15.
Following the Wednesday evening public lecture, a reception and a
poster session will showcase related work by students and faculty.
This will be a major opportunity to both interact with the public and
discover what other researchers on campus are doing in the
sustainability and global change fields. As such, wide-spread
involvement is sought. As an added inducement, there is also a $300
prize for the best student poster. To ensure adequate poster space,
please submit an abstract (as plain text, not html and not as an
attachment) by Monday, October 22 to deansci@mun.ca.
6. Skills Building Workshops: Volunteer Recruitment and Fundraising 101
Join the Newfoundland and Labrador Environment Network (NLEN) and
Community Services Council Newfoundland and Labrador (CSC) on
November 23 and 24 for two dynamic workshops for nonprofit
organizations.
Friday, November 23 – Volunteer Recruitment
This session takes a hands-on interactive approach that will result in
the development of volunteer position descriptions, and provides
specific cost-effective techniques for reaching potential volunteers.
Participants will consider the most appropriate places to target
recruitment efforts, and based on organizational capabilities, how
volunteer opportunities should be promoted.
Friday, November 23 – Volunteer Recruitment will be held in the CSC
Boardroom, Virginia Park Plaza, Newfoundland Drive
Saturday, November 24 – Fundraising 101 with Ken Wyman
Have you always wanted to learn the secrets of better fundraising? Are
you looking for funding for core costs, or hoping to get your
volunteers involved in fundraising? Come learn from the fundraising
guru of Canada!
(This workshop is subsidized by Mountain Equipment Co-op)
Saturday, November 24 – Fundraising 101 will be held at The Fluvarium,
Nagles Place, Pippy Park

7. MUN Project Green hosts Zero Waste Lunch Meeting
In celebration of Waste Reduction Week, MUN Project Green is hosting a
zero waste lunch meeting. On Wednesday October 17th from 12 – 2 pm in
MUNSU Council Chambers to raise awareness about the importance of
reducing waste in everyday activities. All participants at the lunch
are asked to bring
along their lunch in environmentally friendly packaging such as
reusable and/or recyclable containers. All waste will then either be
composted or recycled where possible. Participants are also encouraged
to bring along local and organic food if possible, as well as
beverages in reuseable containers. All new and current Project Green
members welcome! We will be discussing potential funding opportunities
for new projects for the coming year.
8. Take Part in ECTA Tely Hike / ECTA Spurwink Path Hike Cancelled
Due to a conflict with the East Coast Trail Association major fund
raising event, the ECTA Tely Hike, the scheduled October 20th led hike
on the Spurwink Path has been cancelled. We encourage you to take
part in the Tely Hike on the brand new trail between Logy Bay and
Quidi Vidi instead. Registration for that event takes place at the
Legion Parking lot on the north side of Quidi Vidi Lake at 08:30 am on
Saturday, October 20. We hope to see you there. Contact event

9. CPAWS hosts Letter Writing Session
The second NLEN letter writing session will take place on October 23rd
at 7 pm at the Environmental Gathering Place, 3rd Floor. This session
will be hosted by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and will
focus on responsible ecotourism. Letter writing materials will be
provided Please come and bring a friend!

Hydro
Offshore oil production has been a great boon to the provincial
economy and will continue for decades. However, in the long term, oil
is a finite resource. Alternative and renewable sources of energy are
being explored in many geographic areas. Here at home, the Province
recently released its energy plan, Focussing Our Energy, which refers
to wind and other sources. NL Hydro has been developing wind energy
projects in several locations as well as an experimental
wind-hydrogen-diesel system in Ramea. Come hear Greg Jones of NL
Hydro speak about energy planning and future directions.

11. Corner Brook Christmas Bird Count
Hello Humber Naturalists and friends,
Every year the Humber Natural History Society oversees the Corner
Brook Christmas Bird Count. This is a single day event when several
parties and individuals canvass a 24km diameter circle and attempt to
record all the birds in the Corner Brook area
This year’s Christmas Bird Count must take place between Dec 14 and
Jan 5 inclusive. There are four weekends within that time frame. If
you are interested in helping with this year’s bird count, please
indicate by return email on which of those dates you would be
available for the count.

12. Film Screening: The 11th Hour
I am very happy to announce that the Monday Night Movies series is
adding a film for the month of October. In partnership with the
Western Environment Centre ( http://www.wecnl.ca/ ) we are pleased to
present the film The 11th Hour. This documentary brings the issue of
global warming to the forefront with the help of its narrator, writer
and producer, Leonardo DiCaprio. The 11th Hour is a look at the state
of the global environment including visionary and practical solutions
for restoring the planet’s ecosystems.
The 11th Hour will screen on Monday, October 22 at 7 pm at the
Majestic Theatre. Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for students. and TNL
season’s pass holders. Memberships to the WEC will also be available
for purchase. Please join us for this important film and feel free to

The October gathering of Green Drinks St. John’s is being held in

14. DFO Habitat Management Program: DFO and ENGO Collaboration
Julie Huntington of CPAWS is seeking input from interested and
concerned ENGOs and other members of the public with regards to
questions and concerns you have with regards to DFO’s risk management
framework. She is attending a workshop in November with DFO and ENGO
representatives from around Canada and has been asked to prepare
something for the Newfoundland Region. Please contact her with your
concerns and any supporting evidence (see below). Calls and emails

The following should be addressed in each question
1) Area and fish habitat in question
2) Threats / mitigation
3) DFO management measures taken
4) Net result in terms of habitat preservation
5) Suggested solutions / improvements in habitat protection
Other questions regarding the Risk Management Framework:
Does the RMF adequately meet the concerns of ENGOs and the public and
does it fulfill the mandate of DFO? Is the evaluation mechanism within
the RMF easy to understand?
Can you suggest alternative management frameworks that have been successful?
15. EECOM 08: An Environmental Education Gathering Sept 25 – 28, 2008
EECOM is the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and

Gros Morne Gatherings (a division of the Gros Morne Cooperating
Association) in partnership with EECOM and Gros Morne National Park,
will host a national conference in Gros Morne from September
25th-28th, 2008.
We are seeking your input on helping us determine the program content

17. Congratulations Al Gore – Nobel Peace Prize
Former U.S. vice-president Al Gore and the UN’s Intergovernmental
Panel on Climate Change won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for
their efforts to spread awareness of man-made climate change and lay
the foundations for counteracting it.
